About: Julie Pallant

I created this website to provide clear, practical support for students, researchers, and anyone trying to make sense of statistics. My aim is to make the research process more manageable by offering guidance, tools, and resources that are accessible, well organised, and grounded in many years of teaching, research, and professional practice.

My background

For the past 25 years I have worked as an author, researcher, lecturer, psychologist, and statistical consultant. Across these roles, my focus has been on helping people build confidence in research methods, data analysis, and evidence-based thinking.

I am the author of the SPSS Survival Manual, a step-by-step guide to data analysis using IBM SPSS. The book was written to provide the kind of support that many students and researchers need when they are learning how to prepare data, choose appropriate analyses, interpret output, and write up results. It has been widely used by readers looking for a practical and accessible guide to statistical analysis.

My background as a psychologist has also influenced the way I teach and communicate. I understand that statistics is not just a technical issue for many people. It can also be a source of uncertainty, stress, and self-doubt, particularly for students and researchers who may already be under pressure. Because of this, I have always tried to explain statistics in a way that is calm, clear, and supportive, without unnecessary jargon or formula. My goal is not simply to tell people which buttons to press, but to help them understand what they are doing and why.

The Statistics Survival Hub

The Statistics Survival Hub has been designed to support users at different stages of the research process.

The Sample Size Calculator can help with planning your study, and the Stats Selection Tool can help narrow down the statistical approach most likely to suit a particular research question and dataset. These tools are intended as practical guides to make the process easier to approach, while also encouraging users to review the relevant literature in their own field and seek professional advice where needed.

This website reflects my long-standing commitment to making statistics more understandable, more accessible, and less overwhelming. Good research depends not only on technical knowledge, but also on thoughtful planning, clear explanation, and confidence in the decisions being made. I hope the resources provided here help make that process easier for you.

If you feel uncertain or nervous about statistics, you are not alone, and you are in the right place. The resources on this site are designed to support you step by step and help you approach the research process with greater clarity and confidence.
