About Julie Pallant

I created this website to provide clear, practical support for students, researchers, and anyone trying to make sense of statistics. My aim is to make the research process more manageable by offering guidance, tools, and resources that are accessible, well organised, and grounded in many years of teaching, research, and professional practice.

For the past 25 years I have worked as an author, researcher, lecturer, psychologist, and statistical consultant. Across these roles, my focus has been on helping people build confidence in research methods, data analysis, and evidence-based thinking.

MY BACKGROUND

Why I teach statistics the way I do

My background as a psychologist has influenced the way I teach and communicate. I understand that statistics is not just a technical issue for many people. It can also be a source of uncertainty, stress, and self-doubt, particularly for students and researchers who may already be under pressure.

Because of this, I have always tried to explain statistics in a way that is calm, clear, and supportive, without unnecessary jargon or formulas. My goal is not simply to tell people which buttons to press, but to help them understand what they are doing and why.

This approach reflects a long-standing commitment to making statistics more understandable, more accessible, and less overwhelming. Good research depends not only on technical knowledge, but also on thoughtful planning, clear explanation, and confidence in the decisions being made.

THE STATISTICS SURVIVAL HUB

Free tools for every stage of your research

The hub provides you with three free interactive tools designed to support you at different points in the research process.

STEP 1

Which test should I use?

The Stats Selection Tool guides you through a series of questions about your research design and data to recommend an appropriate statistical test.

STEP 2

How many participants do I need?

The Sample Size Calculator helps you plan your study by estimating the sample size needed to detect an effect with adequate statistical power.

SUPPORT TOOL

How do I calculate an effect size?

The Effect Size Calculator helps you calculate, convert, or extract effect size information needed for planning, interpretation, and reporting.

If you feel uncertain or nervous about statistics, you are not alone, and you are in the right place.

The resources on this site are designed to support you step by step and help you approach the research process with greater clarity and confidence.
